Globalization is the growing trend towards worldwide markets in products, capital and labor, unrestricted by barriers. Globalization is not a new process but it has accelerated in recent years with the rapid growth of multinational companies and with the expansion of free trade with fewer quotas on imports. There are many key features of globalization, which has made an impact on business strategies such as; increased international trade, freer movement of workers between countries and finally the growth of multinational businesses in all countries. These create both potential opportunities but also limitations to businesses. In this essay I will discuss both sides. The expansion of national businesses has helped to raise productivity and efficiency in the UK economy. This provides a solid foundation and sustaining a comparative advantage in the areas where the UK still has some world class manufacturing businesses. Inward investment allows for the application of better manufacturing techniques, this could include Just-in-time supply strategies, which also speeds up the process of applying new technologies and spreading information. Honda use this system of JIT in the UK market, by doing this is creates more competitors within the business because you always order the right amount, which will keep your inventories low which therefore, means your costs will be lower. By Honda having this advantage it allows them to invest there saved money elsewhere in the business. Globalization creates threats for UK businesses because it has intensified the competition with in other businesses. Due to the rising import penetration and also the switch of manufacturing to find a lower-cost production centres in Eastern Europe and South Asia, this has caused a fall in output and therefore thousands of jobs are lost in the UK each year. By this happening it leads a rise in unemployment, which ultimately lead to worsening in the regional economic divide. An example of this is Dyson, they moved from a small village called Malmemsbery in the county of Wiltshire to South East Asia, by doing this is made 800 employees redundant and this has a massive effect on the local community. Globalization creates more opportunities than threats for UK business; due the current movement of globalization the terms of trade have moved into the UK favor. For example, the UK economy is moving further and further towards the high production, sale of high value manufacturing and high knowledge services which tend to command in global markets a price higher than the cost of importing cheaper manufactured goods e.g. the UK exports of high quality luxury cars such as Bentley and Rolls Royce which seem to command the market around the world the nit comes to luxury cars. Due to the manufactures high expertise it is very difficult for other car companies who want to enter the market such as Ford or Toyota as they do not have such as expertise in their business. This switch towards more expensive products as the main source of exports provides the UK with better living standards and most importantly the opportunity cost of exporting has moved in to the UK favor. Another threat in which globalization has caused is the threats to the UK service industries. O2 outsourced there call centers out to India as it has lower labor costs. This links back to my last point of making people redundant due to the outsourcing of a business abroad. Another negative claim is that O2 customers, the British public prefer to have English accents and easier to pronounce names this is not xenophobia on behalf of the British public but instead an ease of transaction as many customers report unsatisfactory calls. This also puts pressure on the businesses as they are taking a risk of moving abroad but also it may cause the business to drive down real pay levels in the UK serve sectors in order to compete more effectively. Over the last 12 years the UK has enjoyed a period of sustained economic growth, rising employment and improving living standards. The UK growth has been on a trend rate of 2.5% per annum, which is the one of the longest growth phases for nearly 100 years. This healthy trend is due to the rising levels of trade and investment spurred on by international competition. Finally a threat in which globalization can cause is the fear of the effect globalization will cause to the environment. The huge growth in competition in the UK has lead to a massive influx in pollution over the UK from sea freight transport to international air transport, this long distance travelling leads to pollution being spread all over the UK and the ever rising scale of household and industrial waste leads to an enormous external costs. The likes of Tesco and ASDA which freight and ship a variety of food products and cheap electrical goods has meant that the customer has benefited the most from cheaper costs however this has had a detrimental affect on the environment, with broccoli from Japan, oranges from Florida and lamb from New-Zealand this is meant that these companies are racking up huge amounts of travelling which leads to a massive increase of carbon footprint. To conclude this quote sums up my views of globalization in the UK: â€Å"The things that Britain has always had a comparative advantage in selling to the world — financial services, scientific research, education, entertainment and so on — are rising in price. Because of this shift in relative prices, the British people have effectively enjoyed a large pay increase without having to work any harder†

Although taking part of extra involvement in school activities may be stressful and time consuming it can also give motivation and reasons to strive to do better. Students have increasingly become involved in the improvement and enhancement of their own learning experiences.In today’s society it is now a necessity and desired to have a higher education. The quality assurance of a higher education can not only secure the work force, but stability for yourself and family. This racial stereotyping has resulted in the birth of a false ideology that the white skin is superior which is manifested in the mindset of both the white and black South-Africans. The above has its roots in the Apartheid movement which resulted in the geographic separation of humans defined through decree. It was a gradual and procedural process of systemically categorizing humans based on race. Although history has defined the start (1948) and the end (1994) of this policy, it cannot be classified as a one-off event since its ideology was borrowed from the subtle yet dominant arbitrary categorization of South Africans during the colonial era of British rule (Franchi, 2003). These colonialists had already constructed the racial difference by â€Å"Europeans† were distinguished from â€Å"coloreds† or the native Africans. Henceforth, an act was passed which divided the population into four categories namely the White, Colored (those belonging to mixed races), Ba ntu (native Black Africans) and Asians (that included people from the subcontinent as well as China) (Franchi, 2003). This, however, was later followed by a more severe legal implementation of the actual â€Å"Apartheid† policy that exacerbated the exploitation and de-humanization of the local indigenous majority at the hands of the White colonist minority. Social privilege was granted to the South Africans that were â€Å"white-skinned† such that they monopolized political authority to continue to enjoy this supremacy. This policy encompassed all spheres of life including political, social and economic aspects that progressively deprived the Black South-Africans of their dwellings, nationality and civil liberties. Laws were passed in this regard from 1948 to 1958 that prohibited the sharing of land, education, labor, marriage, sexual relations and social services between the native Black South Africans and their White counterparts (Franchi, 2003). Black South Africans were required by law to bear â€Å"pass-books† that contained their work and home address (Franchi, 2003). Indigenous South Africans who failed to produce necessary documents upon spot checks were later subjected to brutal treatment and expelled to their demarcated regions (Franchi, 2003). What had begun as a political oppression had now traumatized the lives of the indigenous blacks of South Africa. This psychological imprint remains fresh in the minds of many such natives to date. On the other hand, Tayo is raise by Josiah and Grandma. They teach him the traditions and storytelling. The key is there, that makes Tayo and Rocky different: the way they are raise. It develops their feelings for their origins and makes them proud or ashamed of where they belong and who they are. Also, when Tayo and Auntie are alone she makes it clear that he is different in a wrong way. Auntie wants no success for Tayo, only for Rocky. This makes Tayo feels like an outsider in the family and gives the sentiment of not belonging anywhere, but he never loses faith. Yet, family motivates Rocky to act white. Tayo has to make an effort to be noticed in the family; he has to take care of the cattle and even decides to join Rocky in the army. While Rocky has to do nothing and family members support him the most. Going to war is something that Tayo does for belonging. It has some success; Rocky calls him â€Å"brother† and not â€Å"cousin†. In white school, teachers teach them that storytelling is pure superstition; it which is science they have to believe in. Tayo and Rocky are taught the same, Rocky succeeds and Tayo does not. Despite the fact that the teachers tell Tayo that traditions and storytelling are nonsenses he stills believes. Nevertheless, Rocky, After their first year of boarding school in Albuquerque, Tayo saw how Rocky deliberately avoided the old-time ways. Old Grandma shook her head at him, but he called it superstition, and he opened his books to show her. Rocky through Auntie’s previous influence, gets easily motivated by the white teachers. The teachers’ goal is to eliminate their beliefs, so Native Americans would start thinking â€Å"white†. Watching Rocky’s success in school â€Å"he listened to his teachers, and he listened to his coachThey told him, Nothing can stop you now except one thing: dont let the people at home hold you backAuntiewanted him to be a success. She could see what white people wanted in an Indian, and she believed this way was his only chance.† Rocky now thinks as a white man, but Tayo is still loyal to his Native American beliefs. Rocky’s decision to go to the war is driven by the goal of being as a white man and â€Å"belonging in America†. Rocky dies in war. Tayo and friends that attended white school together come back. All of them are suffering from an internal conflict, post traumatic effect. Tayo wants to cure himself and starts a traditional ceremony. The other men are like Rocky, they want to be white and reject their own culture. â€Å"So they tried to sink the loss in booze, and silence their grief with war stories about their courage, defending the land they had already lost.† The ones that are like Rocky, consequently, automedicate themselves with alcohol because they believe in nothing else. If Rocky had returned from the war he would have found in the same situation. In war they triumph, they are equally important as white men. â€Å"She looked at these Laguna guys. They had been treated first class once, with their uniforms. As long as there had been a war and the white people were afraid of the Japs and Hitler.† Without their uniforms, without being recognized as American soldiers, the Native Americans are again found discrimination. So they drink even more to remember that belonging â€Å"Here they are, trying to bring back that old feeling, that feeling they belonged to America the way they felt during war Belonging was drinking and laughing with the platoon, dancing with blond women, buying drinks†¦ They repeated the stories about good time like long medicine chants† . They are killing themselves with alcohol, the same way Rocky would do if he had back from the war. Because they prefer alcohol over medicine plants, or anything that is from their own culture. They already feel white and they like it more. In spite of this, Tayo cures himself and starts even a better life, the ceremony makes him a survivor. Leslie Marmon Silko between Tayo and Rocky shows the reader, even when Rocky is dead, how traditions can save the souls of who believe. Rocky and the other men modernize everything and eliminate their own origins. The people that they really are inside. Tayo, instead, combines the traditions and creates a new ceremony that includes white culture, but preserves the origins of the Native Americans. The other men are dead alive. Tayo is like that after the war, but ceremonies save him and make him a true survivor. Also, he has the function of a connection between the older and younger generations of Native Americans. The author concludes that in this modern and horrible world, only the ones that adapt and accept the change positively will survive and be happy. Development Of Language Through Communication The need to share and relate to our environment made way for the formulation of a means of communicating and further allowed for the development of language. The view that Language is an innate ability and not develop through learning may be flawed in the sense that it can be developed through basic interaction of ones surrounding as well as a more advance development which well require some external assistance. Language is defined as a set of rules shared by individuals who are communicating, that allows them to exchange thoughts , ideas and emotions, where as innate abilities can be seen as skills which are genetically or biologically hardwired into an individuals being. There are many theories as to the development/acquisition of language, such as the Babbling Perspective, Social Interactionist Theory and The Nativist Perspective. The Babbling Perspective as put forward by BF. Skinner argues that adults shape the speech of children by reinforcing the babbling of infants that sound most like words (Skinner, 1957). Dr. C. George Boerees claim is that language all begins in infancy, he states that from conception to the first 6 months babies make a significant amount of noise; they Yell, Squeal, Growl and gives Raspberries, They also Coo; Cooing is what he recognized and theorized as the production of what will later become Vowels (A,E,I,O,U). From 6 Months to about 10 Months they produce somewhat more complicated sounds called babbling, first they produce their vowels starting with the more round back vowels (oo, oh, ah.) working their way the unrounded vowels (ee,eh,ah..) they usually form their first consonants H,M and B which can be combined with t he vowels to make syllables, soon after they will add P,T,D,N,W,F,V and Y, a little later K,G and NG. He also recognized that infants will further add S and Z and took awhile longer to form SH, CH, J and TH, the very last sound would be L and R. Boeree further acknowledge that because the way language is develop in infants it causes them to pronounce words oddly, for example Fis does fine for Fish, Wobbut for Robert and Cawa for Carla. He also stressed that they can perceive far more than they can pronounce, this is sometimes called the Fis phenomenon. Infants he argues might not be able to say certain words, but they will not put up with adults mispronouncing them. Boeree went on to state that both parents plays a huge role in the forming of the childs language, this means that even if we are pre-programmed in some way to speak language, we need to learn a specific language from the people around us, he also state that a mother wouldà ¿typically adjust their speech to fit the childs level, this he says is called Motherese.à ¿ Motherese is a universal feature that is found in practically every culture, it takes the form of a sing-song quality and many special baby words. It is also embedded into the context of theà ¿immediateà ¿surroundings, with constant reference to things nearby ad activities that are on going. Motherese also involves subtleà ¿shapingà ¿called protoconversations, here mother involves infants that do little more than just coo and babble. For example: Mother, Child (one year old) MotherChild Look! (Getting the childs attention)(Baby touches picture) What are these? (Asking question)à ¿(Baby babbles and smiles) Yes, they are doggies (naming Object) à ¿ (Child vocalizes smiles and looks at mom) (Mom laughs) Yes, Doggies! (Repeating) (Child vocalizes and smiles) (Laugh) Yes! (Giving feedback)(Child laughs) Mother would also ask questions like Where is it? and What is it doing? any response would be rewarded with happiness. The conversation however becomes more meaningful when the child is able to use their own words. Boeree concluded that by 10 months most children are able to understand between 5-10 à ¿words, he also observed that a significant portion are able to learn up to 40 words. One other theory is that of the Social Interactionist formulated by Lev Vygotsky, in the 1950s and 1960s. This theory argues that language development is both biological and social; it further states that language learning is influenced by the desire of children to communicate with others within their environment. (Shaffer, 2003). Other Interactionist believes that children are born with powerful brains that slowly predispose them to acquire new understandings that they are motivate to share with others. (Bates, 1993, Tomasella, 1995) Interactionist focuses onà ¿collaborative learning; this is the view that with older people will help children to develop both cognitively and linguistically. (Shaffer, et.al, 2002). Learning is promoted through collaboration collaboration among students, and between students and teacher. From a social Interactionist perspective as students share background knowledge and participate in the give and take of collaborative and cooperative activities they are actually negotiating meaning. They are building knowledge, not as individuals, but as a group. People who surround the individual student, and the culture within which that person lives, greatly affect the way he or she makes sense of the world. This is an ongoing process through out the development of the individuals life; this can take the form of simple task early in the childs life, which may include team sports, and jigsaw puzzles. As the child develops other forms of collaborative learning would include networking, and mentoring. Each of these activities would help the child to interact with those around them, to ask question, and to find solution for said questions. Noam Chomsky (1950) played an integral role in language development with his theory known as the Nativist perspective, this perspective is of the view that humans are biologically programmed to gain knowledge. Chomsky further argues that all humans have a Language Acquisition Device (LAD). The LAD he states contains knowledge of grammatical rules common to all language. (Cited by Shaffer, et.al, 2002). The LAD also allows children to understand the rules of whatever language listing to. Chomsky also developed the concepts of transformational grammar, Surface Structure and Deep meaning. Transformational grammar refers to grammar that transforms a sentence; Surface structures are words that are actually written and deep meaning refers to the underlining meaning or message of a sentence (Mothn, 2005). Chomsky argues that children know about deep structure and they are also able to apply a rule that allows them to manipulate these structures, he called these grammatical transformations. One such example of this is in my view is crying, a newborn who is hungry might not be able toà ¿readilyà ¿say Mom Im hungry but its need to communicate is discomfort stimulates a neurological response (Crying) that will not get the attention of the parent but also convey the childs message, not to say the parent may immediately know that the child want to be fed, but its here her own need to understand the child causes her to perform a series of check for example a diaper check and th e child realizing that its need its need for food is not being address may now begin to cry louder until satisfaction is present, this in return creates a form of language between child and parent that will later take them on a journey of a more advance level of language development which involve proper vocalization. In essence Chomskys perspective that if a child has a properly functioning Language Acquisition Device(LAD) then language will develop regardless of the kind of language the exposed to, as long as the child is raised in an otherwiseà ¿nurturing environment.(Fitch,W.T.S,2009) Chomskys views areà ¿criticized saying it focuses mainly on the internal mental structure and thinking process of the child. Critics have argued that this is unlikely,à ¿stemmingà ¿from their own researched and evidence gathered they say that it would not fully enable us to understand what exactly going on in aà ¿childsà ¿mind. Further critiques were based on the role of people assisting the child to learn language which tends to be overlooked. Researchers have observed that adult speech is fraught with hesitations,à ¿repetitions, slip of tongue and so on and therefore provide an imperfect model. however research have shown that adults make considerable modification to their speech when talking toà ¿childrenà ¿, theses modifications are designed to assist the child with language learning(Fitch,W.T.S,2009).

Structure and Aerodynamics of SAAB 340 Series Aircraft The following report will contain information on the SAAB 340 series aircraft in regards to its structure, aerodynamics, propulsion, operation and safety throughout its history (1970s-2017) Introduction The SAAB 340 is a regional aircraft series designed by the Swedish aerospace manufactures with the desire to explore commercial airliners with 30-40 passengers in the 1970s, originally named the SAAB 340A. The plane was selected to run with GE turboprop engines due to their inherent fuel economy compared to a turbofan or turbojet engines. The SAAB 340B was the first development of the SAAB 340A, the newer aircraft had more powerful engines, a larger tail plane and the crafts range and take-off weight where increased. The SAAB 340s ceased production in 1998 with lack of interest from airliners and hence profits reduced. The SAAB 340 has many renditions the most common being the 340A, 340B, 340B plus including carbo, corporate and commercial interior designs. Of note is that originally SAAB AB and Fairchild (an American company) co designed the 340, having the original name of the SF340, Fairchild designed wings, wing mount nacelles and empennage. The SAAB 340 can be defined as a monoplane with a tractor engine setup. It has a tricycle wheel layout and a conventional tail. The wings are dihedral, low mount, tapered and cantilevered from the fuselage with a single spar. Some of these are further investigated below. It would also be of note to mention the SAAB 340B (most common variant of SAAB 340s) has seating typically for 34 passengers where their weight with baggage is 214lbs, a fact sheet with the aircraft data and statistics will be attached in the appendix. Structure and Construction The SAAB 340 uses common and unusual structural components during its 40+ year service, some of the features which has characterised the aircraft is its single spar wing design, cable strengthen tail plane and a metal bonded skin. These structural components used by SAAB AB to maintain the range of their aircraft whilst also increasing range and payload. The SAAB 340 uses a single spar wing which inserted behind the leading edge which allows for the complexity of the wing to be reduced compared to a multi spar wing. This is beneficial in the construction of a regional aircraft due to the reduced in cost in regards to the difficulty in which it is to design and then build a multi spar wing. The single spar also allows for more free space in the wing interrupted only by the ribs which are designed to have holes in them to reduce weight and allow for usable space (fuel and control surface actuators) in the aircraft, see figure 3 in the appendix. The single spar in the tapered wing also allows for a slender trailing edge of the aerofoil which can be further explored in the aerodynamical section of this report. The SAAB 340 uses a unique feature for a commercial airliner to use, a cable was installed from the top of the empennage to another, the unique design will be further explored below however the cable installed on the 340A is a unique structural component using the cables tension to give the wing added structural rigidity. The newer 340B and B plus dont have the cable installed, which may be due to lighter and stronger longerons or ribs or better engineered surfaces like metal bonding which is used to cover over 40% of the aircrafts external surfaces. The use of metal bonding in its surface skin reduces weight and increases the structural integrity of the aircraft. This increased rigidity in the surface allows for the aircraft to be designed with less internal bracing and material weight. By incorporating the structural benefits of an aluminium bonded skin into the aeroplane, SAAB AB and the Engineers can best maximise the range, interior space and payload. The SAAB 340 is made up of common modern aircraft parts and features, the fuselage and wings are made from aluminium ribs, spars, longerons and stringers which although not unique take advantage of the lightness of aluminium and its structural strength compared to a point 3% carbon steel or an expensive composite equivalent. The SAAB AB engineers therefore had to make the most of cheaper but most effective materials to keep costs lows for consumers of the regional aircraft but still have a light and fuel efficient aeroplane to make regional distance with 30-40 passengers as per the original design specifications. The structural aspects of the aircraft are important in making the SAAB 340 maximise its space and payload, the engineers therefore had to combine techniques like tension in cables and intelligently designed wings which will minimise weight but still comply with complex fluid flow around the fuselage and aerofoils as well as can be keep passengers safe and comfortable. Aerodynamics The SAAB 340, like all modern aircraft, is designed to minimise drag whilst maximising lift. The SAAB AB aircraft uses intelligent and mandatory aerodynamics and aerodynamical systems on their aircraft; a unique tail plane, parabolic nose and fuselage shape and the wings shaping plus engine integration. The SAAB 340 has a conventional empennage, where the vertical stabilizer has two parts, highlighted in figure 4 of the appendix. SAAB AB has incorporated this design in the 340 and their 2000 series aircraft. The two stages in the vertical stabiliser helps to create a more stable and streamlined laminar flow structure around the stabiliser and hence allows for the rudder to be more effective in controlling the airflow around it. The SAAB 340 has a typical airliner style parabolic nose cone which leads into a straight circular fuselage (minus the V shape wing mount nacelles on the bottom of the aircraft, shown on figure 6). The parabolic nose cone is highly efficient in having the air flow move around the aircraft without inducing large quantities if air resistance and drag. Further SAAB AB have slimmed the rear of the plane into a point, typical of modern airliners in an effort to have the air flow coming off the aircraft in a low drag streamlined structure. The SAAB 340 uses a tapered, cantilevered, dihedral wing (as mentioned above) and has an equally cantilevered dihedral horizontal stabiliser both of which have aerodynamic features of no winglets, small cross sectional height as well as the wings having been integrated with the engine. The lack there of winglets on the SAAB 340 highlights how the engineers have been able to reduce the mixing of air from the top and bottom of the aerofoil. The usual effect of winglets will create a barrier, not allowing for the high and low speed air flow to create drag and vortexes. SAAB AB have been able to sculpt their aerofoils so that the need for a winglet has been reduced, a technique used by Boeing, on the 747 for example. The SAAB 340 has also integrated their GE turboprop engines into the wing design. This is seen in figure 6 of the document particularly in the front view, where the engine has been slotted into the wing and has allowed for the turboprop to be elegantly and aerodynamically efficiently positioned to reduce the drag which can occur from having an engine hang off the wing. This fitted setup also gives the operational functionality of the aircraft as the retractable undercarriage is also integrated into the engine area. This innovative solution for SAAB AB engineers has allowed for the aircraft to have a retractable undercarriage but keep stability on a runway, giving the SAAB 340 aerodynamically efficient flight and hence fuel efficient flight too. The SAAB 340B+ differs from the 340B due to its extended wingtips which allows for it to be more aerodynamically efficient in more humid environments and to be able to take off on shorter runways, this variation in wing design of the different models gives the aircraft additional enhancements is rural and regional areas where the flying environment isnt ideal. Propulsion The SAAB 340 uses GE turboprop engines with a 4-propeller prop from Dowty Rotol or Hamilton Sundstrand, differences in noise given in figure 5 of the appendix. The SAAB 340B uses the GE CT7-9B, pictured in figure 6 of the appendix, which has an 1870 shp rating [5]. Figure 8 a cutaway of the CT7-9B turboprop [6] The turboprop engine used by the 340 is highly efficient engine with high range for its size. The engine can fly a maximum 470nm with a maximum total weight in excess of 29000lb (take off) on under 6000lb of fuel. The two engines can thrust the SAAB 340B and B Plus at 283 knots at an altitude of 25000 feet. Further information on range and payload is in figure 9 of the appendix. The SAAB 340 has used different engines over the years, originally running CT7-5A2 turboprops the change to a CT7-9B led to an increase in the SHP of the engines, more power, and an increase in fuel efficiency. More so, it is of current note that the SAAB 340B has had recent engine and propeller failures with REX region airlines in Australia. The failure of a Turboprop engine on the 23rd of march 2017 and a propeller falling off mid-flight on the 17th of march 2017. However due to intelligent engineering on behalf of SAAB AB the two planes could fly on one of the turboprops and make a safe emergency landing. Thus, highlighting both the aerodynamic design quality of the aircraft and how the GE CT7-9B engine can still power the aircraft with only half available thrust. Operation Requirements The SAAB 340 requires a runway, crew and a form of refuelling at destination/departure. Due to the SAAB 340s design the aircraft has been deliberately constructed with regional and rural travel in mind where infrastructure is low and basic hence the 340 has built in facilities such as stairs and extra additions for the craft to cope and work in weather of the extremes and on runways made of gravel and dirt. The SAAB 340B has extras such as the gravel pack and longer wingtips which allow for it to operate in humidity and heat without larger runways or advanced asphalt airports [8]. The SAAB 340B requires, at SL with optimal flaps and at ISA, a runway of 4220ft (1.3km) however at less optimum environments the runway needed can be 6690ft (2.02km). The SAAB 340 does require 2 pilots and one flight attendant can be also apart of the crew. Die to the small seating numbers the SAAB 340 doesnt have room for more than one attendant. The floor plan is shown below highlighting where the crew is stationed on a typical 340 layout. Figure 10 SAAB 340 layout as intended by SAAB AB [4] Safety Record The SAAB 340 has a rather good incident record with only four flights ending in fatalities, however this is considered four times to many. The below table makes note of the four fatal incidents of the SAAB 340 [9] Fatal Incidents Year Airline and Flight Fatalities Reason 1994 KLM city hopper 433 3 The Engine Stalled and the Aircraft struck the ground, the Aircraft broke upon impact 1998 Formosa Airlines 13 The Aircraft has electrical faults and the Crew was disorientated, the plane crashed in the ocean 2000 Crossair 498 10 The Aircraft banked to steep causing a spiral dive and resulted in the aircraft crashing 2011 SOL LÃ ­neas AÃ ©reas 5428 22 The Aircraft whilst flying at FL179 began to pick up ice accretion and by the time the plane descended to FL140 the ice was to server causing the crash The SAAB 340 has had successfully operated for many years with only few fatal accidents which is a testament to the engineering behind the aeroplane however aircraft isnt without incident. Most recently Australian regional aircraft carriers Rex regional airlines has had two engine issues. Firstly, on the 17th of march 2017 the propeller fell off the turboprop engine, followed by the 23rd where the engine on the starboard side came up with warnings causing it to land. These two recent examples showcase how even in extreme circumstances where 50% of the planes engines have been rendered useless the pilots can fly the regional airliner safely to an airport to land. Some other notable instances of the SAAB 340B having mid-air issues include a recent Western Air plane crash at Grand Bahama International Airport where following take off the plane experienced issues with its undercarriage and was forced into an emergency landing where the undercarriage then gave way, the intelligent design of fuselage floor and turboprop-wing integration allowed for the plane to stop without causing any major injuries to the passengers [11]. Conclusion The SAAB 340 series was designed in the 1970s as a cost effective and effect aircraft for SAAB AB to explore commercial aviation, this venture led to one of the most successful regional airliners with more units being sold than any other during its 40-year service history. The structural, aerodynamic and propulsion features although common place in aviation demonstrate the design of the 340 as a simple and effective flyer. The 340 series has basic crew and infer structure requirements however this has allowed for it to fly from city to city and onto the county without changing the undercarriage. Coupled with it relative susses in terms of safety the SAAB 340 is a proven reliable aircraft.
